New London Bridge Staircase was opened on Monday by the Lord Mayor of London, Jeffrey Evans, together with Michael Welbank MBE, and blessed with holy water by Cardinal Rector Philip Warner of St Magnus the Martyr.
The site was identified by bere:architects as suitable for a new staircase more than 10 years ago. The design concept emerged over several years in response to lengthy negotiations with the numerous interested parties, and gradually the political and technical constraints have been overcome. The screens were proposed to overcome concerns about maintaining the privacy of neighbouring offices.
